BRIEF HISTORY

A Brief History of Blackjack Game

Blackjack is one of the most popular card games in land-based and online casinos.  Like all other card games, blackjack has its own unique history.  It takes luck and skill to win the game, but what made it famous than other card games is card counting.  This is a game strategy wherein the player calculates the probability of his advantages based on the ratio from high to low cards.  The publicity that surrounded this strategy helped to promote the game.  Individuals were able to win large amounts of money using this method.  But before blackjack was able to establish itself as one of the popular games in casinos, it came a long way.

Retracing the History

Blackjack did not start out as it is.  The name came from a different game which originated in France.  It was derived from a game called Vingt En Un or 21.  The game is similar to the modern blackjack game but with minor differences.  The goal of the game was to reach 21 with the blackjack’s ranking system, but the betting method was made after each round.  The dealer is also the only one to make a double.  After the French revolution, the game migrated to America.  The English name blackjack was derived from a special payout bonus.  The player will get a special payout if he or she gets a hand with an ace of spades and a jack.  This payout was also used to attract players.  The name was frequently attached to the game until it stuck.  Even after the payout bonus was abolished, the name remained and was used ever since.

Blackjack through the Years

Internet Blackjack

Blackjack was outlawed because gambling activities were banned in the 19th century.  It mostly became an underground game, but the more it was restricted, the more it became popular.  It was legalized in Nevada in 1931 including other gambling activities.  Nevada then became the center of card games, thus, the birth of Las Vegas where gamblers freely enjoy blackjack nowadays.  Due to its popularity, other individuals have studied it to come up with better strategies and tactics to win the game.  This is when the card counting system was born.  Edward Thorp wrote a book about the system which enabled players to beat the dealers in casinos.  Casinos, on the other hand, modified rules to their blackjack games.  Players found the book difficult to learn so casinos reinstated the traditional blackjack, but other players are still using card counting techniques in an effort to beat the game.
